It’s a sunny day here in Boston, but cold --- 14 degrees. At sunrise I took a plunge into Quincy Bay to kick off my birthday celebration. I am now 64. The past week has been so hectic, and I haven’t had access to the internet, so I’ve had an abrupt hiatus in my blog activity.
As I lay in bed at my parents’ house this morning, doing too much thinking and too little sleeping, I was listening to a two-hour special report on the radio about Hank Williams, who died in 1953. I enjoyed hearing Williams singing and yodeling about the hardships and heartaches most of us must endure. He was the perfect companion to remind me, as I snuggled beneath heavy blankets listening to the frigid wind dragging its claws across the frosted windows, that many other folks are not as fortunate as me. Many others are still left out in the cold. And since it is my birthday, a day when I often make personal resolutions, being compassionate and actively seeking to assist others gets added to my list, once again.
