Canter's Deli at 419 N.Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles

Open 24 hours a day, 363 days a year (closing on two Jewish holidays), Canter’s Deli is a popular family-run business that has served Los Angeles residents since 1931. Located in the Fairfax district, part of West L.A., the deli’s interior looks like a scene from the 1950s. According to the owners, it is one of the few delicatessens in the United States that still pickles its own pickles in-house.

The owners also state: “Many of Hollywood’s elite have frequented Canter’s over the years. In the 1950’s Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller hung out at the restaurant, as did Jack Benny, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor and Danny Thomas.” And scores of other well-known television, movie, and rock stars continue to dine at the deli.

For lunch, Ron G. had The Brooklyn (hot pastrami on rye) and I had the “For Dedicated Fressers Only” (corned beef and pastrami piled high on rye with a full side order of potato salad and cole slaw). We both had a cold bottle of Dr. Brown’s Cream Soda. Add some horse radish, some mustard and pickles and we had everything we needed for a feast.

After waddling out to our car, feeling stuffed and satisfied, we added to the enjoyable afternoon by viewing some of the unique L.A. sights (people, buildings, and automobiles) as we drove down Fairfax and Melrose avenues before driving up the ramp to the freeway headed to Seal Beach. All the time, Randy Newman's song, "I love L.A." keep playing through my brain.

Ron G. orders the "Brooklyn" and a cream soda.

Many photos, some decades old, decorate the walls.

The booths are comfortable with plenty of room.

My lunch was this mound of pastrami and corned beef.

The cooks at the deli counter are kept busy.

An on-sight bakery provides pastry and breads.

The Los Angeles freeway system has a unique beauty.
